Wow, you think they would have mentioned that.

Mum said that she was going to tell me when I was 14, but before she had the chance, I made a comment about how I thought it was disgusting that some people live together without getting married.

I seriously doubt that happened, I am the most open-minded person about things like that. I think she must have misinterpreted something I said, I'm not sure.

I believe that in the US, if people live together long enough they are considered to be a commonlaw marriage, which inherits a few rights and whatnot that come with a normal marriage - is there anything applicable or similar over there?

Defacto partnerships have a lot of the same rights/benefits/whatever as traditional married couples.

You know how I want to go to Canadia..? Well, my passport expired and I can't find the bloody thing anywhere ANYWAY, so I have to get a new one. Without an old passport, you need a birth certificate. I only have an extract, and that's not good enough.

I asked mum for my certificate and she said she didn't know where it was, but she would look. A few days later, I got impatient, and told her that I would ask the estates clerk at work, who is always having to get birth certificates for estates matters anyway.

So mum got scared that I would get my certificate and realise for myself... that's why she told me.

Don't forget to send in plenty of photo ID, and write legibly in black or dark blue ink. Also, don't use any words that aren't real, and try not to leave the application sitting in rotting coffee for a few weeks before sending it in. Ignore any of the obvious instructions and the person filing the application will most likely ridicule you. The job is incredibly boring, they need to amuse themselves somehow.

And send a tip if you can. If every person would have just sent one dollar that I could keep while I was working there I'd be nearly $60,000 richer. Not that they'd ever let me keep it, but it's a nice thought.

Don't mind me. I haven't been scarred for life by my previous jobs, nope nope.

I should let go of the past. Nothing good will come from my obsessing over passport applications, especially since some day I will be filling out one of my own, and being human I shall accidentally forget some small detail that would have me screaming were I filing it... =P

*puts down the blank application and stops ranting about how stupid people would have to be to write "YES" in the "Eye colour" field*

Hey, cool! You know, that could possibly be a reason why they're still together :) I know in some cases, couples having issues will get married to try to salvage things...

That's very cool about your parents, though :)
